Apply to the English Language Institute

COMPASS ESL Placement Test

The COMPASS ESL test is used in placement testing for English as a Second Language (ESL) students. The results offer placement in the disciplines of listening, grammar, and reading.  For a practice test, please go to http://www.act.org/compass/tests/esl.html.

Students should do the following prior to taking the COMPASS ESL placement test:

  • Complete the International Student (F1/I-20) or Local/Resident Student application process to apply to the English Language Institute.
  • Schedule a specific date and time to take the COMPASS ESL placement test by either calling the Testing Center directly at (706) 507-8020 or by contacting Rachel Wilcox for assistance.  Your appointment should be scheduled as far in advance as possible and at least 3-5 days prior to the date you will be starting classes.
  • There is a $30 test fee that you must pay directly to the Testing Center when you come to your scheduled appointment.
  • Allow 2 to 2½ hours to complete the test.
  • Possible test dates/times:  Monday-Friday at 8:30 am or 1:30 pm.

When you come to your testing appointment

The Testing Center is located in room 207 on the 2nd floor of the Elizabeth Bradley Turner Center.

Make certain to bring a photo I.D and your $30 test fee.  You will need to enter a 9-digit number to start the test.  This can be your phone number or any number you can remember easily.

NO CHILDREN will be allowed in the testing room, and children should not be left unattended on campus.

After testing is completed, results will be printed. This copy is yours to keep.  Another copy will be sent directly to the ELI Program Coordinator for interpretation and placement.  You will be contacted within 24 hours with your results.

You may call Rachel Wilcox at (706) 568-5093 or email wilcox_rachel@colstate.edu for assistance in any part of the application, placement, or registration and payment process.
